Wisconsin is one of nine swing states that will determine the 2012 presidential race, according to this analysis of the electoral map by the Washington Posts political blog, The Fix. The others are Ohio and Iowa in the Midwest; New Hampshire in the Northeast; Virginia, North Carolina and Florida further down the Atlantic Coast, and Colorado and Nevada in the West. Wisconsin is the only state on this list that Democrats have won in each of the past three elections (in fact Democrats have won the state in six straight elections). Of the nine states on this list, its also...

A major Israel TV station on Sunday night broadcast a detailed report on how Israel will go about attacking Irans nuclear facilities in the event that diplomacy and sanctions fail and Israel decides to carry out a military strike. The report, screened on the main evening news of Channel 10, was remarkable both in terms of the access granted to the reporter, who said he had spent weeks with the pilots and other personnel he interviewed, and in the fact that his assessments on a strike were cleared by the military censor. No order to strike is likely to be...
Whit Stillman breaks Hollywood taboo, says he was blacklisted from directing TV

Whit Stillman doesnt want to talk about politics. Ask the famed indie film director for his thoughts about the current Republican primary race, and he politely but flatly declines. No, I have nothing, he says. Lightly pressed further, he changes the subject, turning the tables to ask questions of his own. [....] Mr. Stillman recalls directing an episode of the TV show Homicide: Life on the Street. He had a script he liked, but a rewrite turned a yuppie victim whose family had been murdered into this awful, caricatured yuppie villain. We dont necessarily want to...

(Reuters) - Al Gore's Current TV has bigger problems to deal with than a potential lawsuit from fired news anchor Keith Olbermann - namely not getting kicked off Time Warner Cable for low ratings. According to three sources with knowledge of the situation, Time Warner Cable Inc's carriage agreement with Current TV stipulates that, if the left-leaning political news network fails to meet a minimum threshold for overall viewers in a given quarter, financial penalties such as Current TV being required to increase marketing and promotion spending on the cable operator's systems are triggered. If Current TV misses the audience...

Because three events - sports, entertainment and political - will be vying for our attention. Primary among them is a primary election with the still unsettled race for the Republican presidential nomination and various local races on the ballot. Add a recall vote later this spring and the state's likely status as a battleground in this fall's presidential election, and the national news media is drawn like mice to the cheese state. "Obama used a metaphor from boxing to explain Denmark's role in the world," says Buch-Andersen, introducing the segment. He then roles the tape. "That's fairly typical of the way that Danes have punched above their weight in international affairs," President Obama says at a press availability in the Oval Office with Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt of Denmark. |
Is Oprahs OWN Chapter Coming to an End So Soon?

A year after the worlds most famous talk-show host hung up the towel on her solo act, Oprah Winfrey is finding the behind-the-scenes work is far less glamorous. Winfreys OWN cable network, part owned by Discovery Communications (DISCA: 48.18, -0.15, -0.31%), could lose as much as $143 million this year, on top of the $107 million of negative cash flow it booked in 2011, according to SNL Kagan. The bleak view comes despite efforts by the network to cut costs, including letting go 30 employees -- or 20% of its staff -- earlier this week and canceling Rosie O'Donnell's show...

Anyone remember those TV Westerns that dominated the screens in both the USA and UK during the 50s and 60s? They were evicted wholesale after Fred Silverman of CBS instigated his rural purge in 1970. Why did CBS and the other networks close them down? Who knows, because ratings were certainly not low. The Western on page or screen always had an appeal both inside and outside the USA.
